LEAVE ME, DON’T LEAVE ME (2019, 17 min 27 s, experimental documentary, Korean with English subtitles)
HD video with sound
Leave me, don’t leave me is a gesture to memorialize one of the Jugong Apartment complexes in Gwacheon, South Korea, that disappeared in 2017, to make way for an aggressive urban development megaproject. Such loss of places is prevalent amongst communities in South Korean cities, depriving a group of people of local ties to their personal history and sense of belonging. Through this particular urban development project that began in 2016 in the city of Gwacheon, I have lost a neighbourhood which I consider as part of my identity, where major material references to my childhood memories disappeared. Leave me, don’t leave me is an expression of appreciation for the place, and a reflection on the irreversibility of such operations in contemporary urban spaces.
